Making-Life III – a research platform for art and synthetic biology

17 — 22 May 2015

Bioflia, base for biological arts, Aalto University, Helsinki

Making_Life I (May 2014) introduced the molecular biological foundations of synthetic biology. Making_Life II (November 2014) looked into proto- life, xeno and exobiology. Making_Life III was an artistic prototyping workshop whith exhibtion at Lasipalatsi.

SYNENERGENE is an FP7 EU project titled “Synthetic biology – Engaging with New and Emerging Science and Technology in Responsible Governance of the Science and Society Relationship ”. Synthetic biology (synbio) is the design and construction of biological devices and systems for useful purposes. The project is lead by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology with 27 international partners from science, technology, culture and art. Biotaiteen Seura together with other partners form the integrated platform "Art, Culture & Society”, focuses on the intersection of art and science to understand the cultural signifcance of synbio. Making_Life was designed as an intensive exchange laboratory for artists, scientists and other practitioners to collaboratively explore synthetic biology's ideas and techniques, and its social and cultural implications.
