kilpisjärvi, 2nd of April 2016 _On the hike in the morning to the Saana lake. From the path over the site, the lake looked like a volcano crater filled with snow and scratched in the diameter by traces of snowmobiles. Not a single soul around just the blinding cryospheric whiteness under the vernal sun. Faraway, on the opposite side of the lake, the dark triangular point of a Sami tipi could be seen (I learn two days after this post that this one has been made for tourists). I thought that it’s been a week that I have been here and I haven’t seen any reindeer (which is normal here because Kilpisjärvi is a summer pasture). Just fragmented herd of Norwegian tourists. It was rather strange feeling to cross the landscape from Rovaniemi whithout seeing a single antler. Yesterday Leena said that the winter has been bad for reindeers because of the icy quality of the snow. Animals have to be kept in one zone where they can be fed daily by their owners. I took some images of the tipi from this distance. Later, in the afternoon, before documen- ting Simo’s throwing ball movement test I deleted them all by mistake. Clocks hands get stuck and photographs of (fake) tipis disappear under this latitude hmm… *Thanks Leena for precious informations!
