Join artist Maija Annikki Savolainen for a sequence of reading circles in connection to her exhibition /d a t a c e n t r e at SOLU.

In an exhibition that is shifting over time, these circles repeat throughout to create moments of articulation in Savolainen’s ongoing artistic process. These ritualised events become sites to generate collective energy, knowledge transmission, and speculative enquiry around the work.

Savolainen’s practice draws upon a vast range of disciplines from contemporary art,  architecture and literature, to astronomy, geology, quantum physics, and computer science. Each reading circle brings attention to a different aspect of Savolainen’s work and invites a guest host, with a particular frame of knowledge, to guide the reading and discussion. The texts will be presented and read collectively within the sessions so there is no need to prepare in advance.

Reading Circle I with curator Yvonne Billimore opens with a short excerpt from Dub: Finding Ceremony by Alexis Pauline Gumbs, followed by the text Crystals (in Time and the Hunter) by Italo Calvino. In Reading Circle II, data centre architect Tapani Virkkala joins artist Maija Annikki Savolainen for a presentation and discussion, together they share ‘readings’ and reflections on data centres. In Reading Circle III, radio astronomer Anne Lähteenmäki centers on the subject of archeoastronomy and ancient stone circles , and E.C. Krupp's text Echoes of the Ancient Skies: The Astronomy of Lost Civilizations. The final reading in this series, Reading Circle IV with artist Maija Annikki Savolainen sees the artist perform a reading of her text /d a t a c e n t r e, this reading is held in Finnish.

How to attend

Originally planned to take place within the exhibition at SOLU, the reading circles will now be held as online events over zoom.

To register for one or more of the reading circles please send an email to mari.keskikorsu@bioartsociety.fi or call 040 5065871.

Events are held in either English or Finnish (spoken and written). The language of the event is assigned next to each event.

Tervetuloa lukupiiriin Maija Annikki Savolaisen /d a t a c e n t r e -näyttelyn äärelle!

Kuinka osallistua?

Alunperin SOLU-tilaan suunnitellut lukupiirit järjestetään muuttuneen pandemiatilanteen vuoksi verkossa zoom-alustalla.

Ilmoittautuaksesi yhteen tai useampaan lukupiiriin lähetä sähköpostia osoitteeseen mari.keskikorsu@bioartsociety.fi tai soita 040 5065871.

Lukupiirit ovat joko englannin- tai suomenkielisiä. Tapahtuman kielitiedot on merkattu tapahtumatietojen yhteyteen.

Savolainen julkaisi When the Sense of Belonging is Bound to a System of Movement -monografian vuonna 2014 Kehrer Verlagin kustantamana.

Vuodesta 2012 lähtien Virkkala on työskennellyt erityisesti datakeskushankkeiden parissa.
