Artistic responses to synthetic biology

Art and science are both practices that are based on intellectual creativity; they shape our experience, perception and knowledge of the world. Science and technology, being major societal and cultural activities, are potent forces which are transforming life and influence society on every level. Therefore, critical reflections of new technologies are important for developing our understanding, while artistic imaginations offer us new ways to interpret new realities. The Making_Life exhibition at Lasipalatsi Näyttely presents the results of such a critical reflection.

Four different groups composed from the workshop participants are testing approaches for a critical cultural perception of synthetic biology and displaying their first artistic prototypes:

Your Synthetic Future (at the speed of light) [read more about their process here]
STARBEASTS - An Interstellar Zeitgeber ('time-giver') [read more about their process here]
Living Ashes [read more about their process here]
Vanitas / Dead Growth ml8

The exhibition also includes artefacts from workshop experiments and a selection of videos from the second BIO·FICTION Science Art Film Festival which took place from the 23rd - 25th of October, 2014. The international synthetic biology festival was organised by Vienna-based research and science communication company Biofaction at the Museum of Natural History in Vienna, Austria.

BIO·FICTION explores the emerging field of synthetic biology from different disciplinary angles including science and engineering, social science, cultural studies, amateur biology, art and film making. One cornerstone of the festival is the international short film competition, which introduce documentaries, animation and fiction shorts that explore the thematic. Our call for submissions was answered by 100 submissions from 17 countries and four continents. The 60 shortlisted entries were widely diverse; judging them was certainly not undemanding for our international jury tasked with reviewing and selecting the films. The films deal with the real and fictional societal ramifications of synthetic biology. A selection of films is on display at the Making_Life exhibition.
