As Piritta Puhto is moving on to new adventures later this year, Bioart Society has been looking for a new Managing Director to join our nimble team. We are happy to announce that Eliisa Suvanto will start as the new Managing Director in the end of October.
Eliisa Suvanto is a curator-producer who is a founding and active member of Porin kulttuurisäätö, a collective that has since 2013 focused on site-specific exhibitions, commissioning new artworks and has established its own biennale taking place in changing locations. The collective is motivated by research-based and site-specific approaches, collaborative work, already existing resources, and activism. Eliisa is a former director of the artist-run space Titanik in Turku and Program Manager of PUBLICS in Helsinki. Currently, Eliisa is working with Polygala Biennale – Plants, Animals and Things In-between exhibition opening in mid-October at the Natural History Museum in Helsinki, co-organised together with Anna Jensen.
Eliisa's interests are in the politics of public space and how artistic interventions can challenge them.
"I believe in art's potential to increase curiosity, and its ability to bring unexpected things together. These aspects are truly present at the core of the Bioart Society. Fostering sustainable structures and thinking of new ways of executing them is something I look very much forward to in my new role. In my experience, the Bioart Society not only promotes them but has been actively advancing and reinforcing them since they've started. As my practice is based on collaborative doing and thinking, I couldn't be more excited to join their wonderful team."
