Bioart Society is looking for interns
posted by Milla Millasnoore on 4 September 2023

Bioart Society is a Helsinki-based association developing, producing and facilitating activities around art and natural sciences with an emphasis on biology, ecology and life sciences. The association facilitates Ars Bioarctica, an art & science program with focus on the sub-arctic environment together with the Kilpisjärvi Biological Station of the University of Helsinki as well as the Tokyo Art & Science Research residency together with the BioClub Tokyo and The Finnish Institute in Japan. Bioart Society was established in May 2008 and it currently has over 140 members from Finland and other countries. The Bioart Society runs the SOLU Space in Kalasatama, where we host different events and also have our office space.

We are looking for interns to join our small team of four for autumn, spring and early summer.

This is a suitable opportunity for those who wish to learn more about the operations of an international art association and the Finnish cultural field in general. We welcome applications from students in different fields and from people from minority backgrounds and underrepresented groups. You do not need to have previous experience.

Your tasks will be divided mainly between production (70-80%) and communication (20-30%) depending on the needs of Bioart Society and your wishes relating to the internship.

Our working languages are English and Finnish. We expect fluent English skills from the interns. Finnish skills are not mandatory but seen as an asset.

Tasks our previous interns have had include (but are not limited to):

  • Administrative tasks, incl. assisting with applications and reporting, handling receipts and learning how a small association is administered
  • Event organising, incl. setting up exhibitions, workshops, shopping for equipment etc.
  • Event photography
  • Videography & video editing
  • Layout design
  • Updating social media (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook)
  • Updating the website

Possible time frames for the internship

  1. 16.10.-31.12.2023, (possible to extend until January)
  2. 15.1.-12.4.2024
  3. 25.3.-23.6.2024

Starting and ending times are somewhat flexible. Please let us know when you would like to start working.

The working hours are 20h/week, so it is possible to combine the internship with your studies. Please note that we would like you to occasionally also be available on weekends or during evening hours when we are hosting events.

The salary is 642€/month (part-time).

In your application, please write a bit about your interests and strengths, and what you would like to learn more about. Let us also know why you want to work at the Bioart Society. The deadline for applications is 1st October 2024.

Please note that we will contact the candidates chosen for interviews on Wednesday 4th October, and all interviews for this position will be held on Friday 6 October 2023. The interviews can either be held in person at our office in Kalasatama or via Zoom.
